Where is the Central Okanagan?

The region encompasses over 314,000 hectares of diverse topography straddling the shoreline of Okanagan Lake in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia’s Southern Interior. The largest city within the Central Okanagan is Kelowna, followed by West Kelowna, Lake Country and Peachland. The area is known for its picturesque landscapes, vineyards, and orchards. It also has is a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s a popular destination for tourists and residents alike, offering a mix of natural beauty and urban amenities. Within the Cental Okanagan there are 113 lakes. The most popular lakes in the area are Okanagan Lake, Kalamalka Lake and Wood Lake.

Summers in the Central Okanagan are warm and dry. The months of June, July, and August are the warmest. Average daytime temperatures often exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). This warm and sunny weather makes it an ideal time for outdoor activities.

Winters in the Central Okanagan are relatively mild compared to other parts of Canada. December, January, and February are the coldest months. Daytime temperatures typically range from just above freezing to a few degrees below. Snowfall is relatively limited in the valley bottom. Higher elevations and nearby ski resorts receive ample snowfall. Our region exhibits microclimates due to the variations in elevation. Areas closer to Okanagan Lake tend to have milder winters with less temperature variation. Higher elevations experience colder winters and more snowfall.

How do I get to the nearest ski hills?

Winter sports in the Okanagan are extremely popular. Thankfully, the nearest ski hill is only 45 minutes away from Kelowna. Most Central Okanagan residents like to ski at Big White Ski Resort. Alternatively, residents will go to SilverStar Mountain Resort located in Vernon, BC. There are many snowshoe, walking, and Nordic trails available on the mountains as well. Visitors can enjoy delicious restaurants, excellent spas and shopping.

Directions to Big White Ski Resort

Big White is 56 km southeast of Kelowna, the largest city in the Okanagan Valley. You can fly into Kelowna’s International Airport and take a quick shuttle (55 minutes) to get you to the resort. Major airlines have daily direct flights from many major cities.

Directions to SilverStar Mountain Resort

SilverStar Mountain Resort is a quick twenty-minute drive from Vernon and only a fifty-five-minute drive from Kelowna International Airport.
